Na internete by sme dnes mali pocut zvuky z Marsu: „Všetky dráhové korekcie boli úspešné a americká družica Mars Polar Lander sa rýchlostou 19,3 tisíca kilometrov za hodinu blíži k svojmu cielu,“ potvrdil vcera pre SME Sam Thurman - šéf projektu Mars Polar Lander, ktorý je považovaný za vesmírnu udalost roka. „Predpokladáme, že sonda dosadne na povrch Marsu v oblasti vzdialenej asi 800 kilometrov od južného pólu planéty dnes o 21.00 h stredoeurópskeho casu. Dvadsat minút po pristátí by mali rádiové vlny prenášat prvé správy z Marsu. Najprv pôjde o pätnástminútovú informáciu o technickom stave sondy a meteorologickej situácii, pricom ocakávame teplotu mínus šestdesiat stupnov.“ Sonda pripomínajúca bizarného pavúka s tromi nohami je vybavená stereoskopickou kamerou. Podla S. Thurmana bude obrazový prenos trochu oneskorený, a tak si na panorámu okolia s vrstvami usadenín bude treba pockat niekolko dní. Zvuky Marsu by však už dnes mali byt reprodukované na internetovej stránke http://www.marspolarlander.com. „Sonda prešla za jedenást mesiacov cestu dlhú vyše 600 miliónov kilometrov. Od zajtra do 29. januára roku 2000 je naplánovaný rozsiahly vedecký výskum, ktorého hlavným cielom je pátrat po vode v atmosfére, na povrchu i pod ním a hladat stopy klimatických zmien.“ Popri Americanoch sa na vyhodnocovaní poznatkov zasielaných sondou budú podielat vedci z Ruska, Nemecka, Fínska a Dánska. Úcast na štvrtom automaticky riadenom lete na Mars bude mat aj ceská veda, ktorá ruský laserový dialkomer LIDAR vybavila polovodicovým vysielacom s laserovou diódou, vyrobenou na pražskej Fakulte jadrovej a fyzikálno-inžinierskej CVUT. K tomuto dialkomeru je pripojený mikrofón, vdaka ktorému by sme mali po prvýkrát pocut zvuk z iného sveta: vietor, pieskové búrky a, samozrejme, zvuk pohybu sondy po povrchu Marsu. „Zvuky budú úplne odlišné od všetkého, co doposial ludské ucho poculo, pretože atmosféra Marsu je stokrát redšia než pozemská,“ dodal S.
